After completing his BFA at the University of Regina, David moved to Calgary, Alberta, to begin his professional career, appearing in two plays with Shakespeare in the Park. David quickly became a member of the Alberta theatre community, working with Theatre Calgary, Stage West and The Mayfield.
David made the move to Ontario in 2001, joining the Shaw Festival as a company member under Christopher Newton, and then Jackie Maxwell. Over the course of seven seasons, he went from playing small ensemble roles to tackling great parts such as Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, Stephen in The Cassilis Engagement, Hannibal in Happy End and Stephen in Major Barbara.
In 2008 David joined the company at The Stratford Festival to play Rosencrantz in Adrian Noble’s production of Hamlet, and appeared in The Taming of the Shrew and All’s Well That Ends Well. At the end of that season, after eight years of working at Canada’s largest repertory theatres, David decided to strike out on a different path, beginning a long period of working in many of Canada’s regional theatres. From the Neptune Theatre in Halifax to the Chemainus Theatre Festival on Vancouver Island, David has played leading roles in most regional theatres across the country.
In 2013 David directed for the first time, directing a musical called If I Weren’t With You for Lunchbox Theatre in Calgary, for which he was nominated for a Calgary Critter Award. He then went on to serve as the Artistic Director of The Souris Valley Theatre in Estevan, Saskatchewan, for the 2013 summer season, after the theatre had been shut down for two years due to flooding. A true Babes in Arms experience, busy with painting sets, moving the lawn, site organizing and front of house duties, David also directed A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.
In addition to a busy acting schedule, David teaches at Sheridan College in the Music Theatre Program (Shakespeare, Scene Study, One-on-One Tutorials), Randolph College (Musical Theatre Performance) and the University of Waterloo (Acting with Text). David has also taught a course in Script Analysis at Western University.
